Hard to explain, use ratios. The bottom half is 16 and 7, so you would do 7/16 and get 0.4375. Multiply that by 12 from the top half, and you would get 5.25 You could also do 12 / 16, get 0.75, and multiply that by 7 to also get 5.25 Honestly idk which is the right way.

You know the triangles are similar triangles because they have the same angles. From here you can find the answer is 12.25: first find the ratio of the small triangle to the larger one: 16 / 12 then you can solve for x-7: [latex] frac{16}{12} = frac{7}{x-7} [/latex] Then you find that x-7 = 5.25 from there you can add 7 (5.25 + 7 = 12.25) and you have x check: 16 / 7 = 2.285 12 / 5.25 = 2.285
