The first fugitive slave act in 1950 allowed for the capture of runaway slaves within U.S. territory and to return them to their designated owners and to punish them however they wished, along with everyone who aided in their escape. The revised Fugitive slave act in 1793 allowed even harsher means to capture runaway slaves and even harsher punishments regarding helping the slaves escape. The fugitive slave act caused a lot of controversy.
