Mineral crystals are characterized by having flat  and habit surfaces.  The most important characteristic of the crystal is that their atoms are arranged in a regular, highly ordered way. The faces of the mineral crystals are flat and have specific orientation. We recognize most by their shape, but what truly defines them whether a solid is a crystal or not is the microscopic atomic arrangement.
